FAC 101 – Introduction to Online Teaching

Course Description:
This course introduces new online faculty to the policies, procedures, proficiencies, and protocols necessary to teach for Moody Distance Learning. New adjunct instructors will learn about the Blackboard Course Management System, differences between traditional face-to-face and online teaching and learning, and how to effectively engage students in the online environment.

Course Objectives:
Upon successful completion of the course, faculty/students will be able to:
  1. Summarize the key policies and procedures required to teach for Moody Distance Learning in order to meet state and federal guidelines.
  2. Demonstrate competency in setting up and managing courses in the Blackboard Course Management System.
  3. Distinguish sound instructional design principles when converting traditional face-to-face courses to online learning.
  4. Illustrate effective online instructional techniques to achieve learning objectives.

Introduction to adult learners and online learning
*Online library research and write a paper about adult learners

Introduction to differences between traditional and online teaching
*Watch “A New Classroom” and reflect on the questions with the assignment.

*Evaluate information from readings and video and write a paper about preparing for online learning

Introduction to Discussion Boards
*Write responses to the given scenarios in discussion boards
*Work with your group to evaluate discussion groups; videoconference and write a group paper
*Discuss how you will interact with students in your discussion boards

Sept. 11-17
Introduction to Grading Rubrics
*Create a grading rubric for Discussion Boards and apply it to another student’s posts

*Read the information about the importance of and use of grading rubrics

*Discuss how rubrics are helpful in the online classroom
